Abstract: We investigate the ground state energy of $N$ non-relativistic bosons with Newtonian gravitational attraction, and prove a two-term asymptotics of the form $N^3 e_{\rm H} + N^2 \infspec H_{\rm Bog} + o(N^2)$ as $N\to \infty$, where the leading term is the well-known Hartree approximation, while $H_{\rm Bog}$ denotes a suitable Bogoliubov Hamiltonian obtained as a quantization of the Hessian of the Hartree functional. More generally, we validate the Bogoliubov approximation for the ground state energy of translation-invariant Bose systems with attractive interactions in the mean-field limit.
